Urethral Caruncle

A benign granulomatous tumour, about the size of a pea, in the distal urethra — occurs exclusively in post-menopausal women.

Presentation

Pain/tenderness around the urethra, dysuria, and haematuria (the main symptom) — frank bleeding from the site can occur.

Investigations

Cystoscopy and biopsy are often required for diagnosis.

Management

  • Referral to urology
  • Warm salt baths
  • Topical oestrogen creams
  • Surgical techniques (laser vaporisation, cryotherapy, or surgical excision) if needed
